Our Role - Raising Awareness, Information, Support and Campaigning

Kidney Cancer UK is committed to providing all kidney cancer patients and healthcare professionals with reliable and up-to-date information about kidney cancer and its treatments through the provision of our informative literature and website.

We aim to:

  • Raise Awareness amongst healthcare professionals and the general public to encourage earlier diagnosis
  • Provide up to date and reliable Information to healthcare professionals and kidney cancer patients and their carers
  • Provide Support to patients and their carers
  • Campaign for new kidney cancer drugs to be made available on the NHS

Over the years, it has become more and more evident that early diagnosis of kidney cancer is crucial as it can hugely improve the chance of survival. Therefore, education and the raising of awareness amongst healthcare professionals and the general public about the signs and symptoms of kidney cancer is absolutely vital in order to save thousands of lives each year. In addition, it is vitally important that once diagnosed, patients have access to the right information at the right time. Kidney Cancer UK, as the most experienced and longstanding kidney cancer charity in the UK, is proud to have provided thousands of patients, healthcare professions, hospitals and cancer information centres with this vitally important information. Furthermore, we have given hope to advanced kidney cancer patients by campaigning for new drugs and treatments to be made available on the NHS.

We rely heavily on fundraising and donations in order to maintain our activities. We remain forever grateful to everyone who has supported our charity over the years, however, your fundraising, donations, help and support are vital to our future survival.

Influencing the future

Whilst there are encouraging signs in the UK that cancer patients and their carers are being given more opportunity to have their say in the policy decisions that affect them locally and nationally, we are continuing to make submissions to the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) in respect of new treatments for kidney cancer and their availability. NICE is an independent organisation responsible for providing national guidance on promoting good health, preventing and treating ill health and decisions on which treatments should be made available on the NHS.

To this end, we have already made several important submissions to NICE and continue to attend very important Parliamentary events which provide excellent opportunities to explain the difficulties kidney cancer patients face to Parliamentarians and a large number of healthcare professionals.

UK Rarer Cancers Alliance

http://www.rare-cancer.org/

KCUK previously played a leading role in establishing a new UK Rarer Cancers Alliance, thanks especially to the work of the late Kevin McKiernan and the late Mike Arscott. This group seeks to focus attention on the needs of those affected by the less common cancers, since at present these cancers are generally not well supported in terms of cancer services, research funding and public health information. Another important initiative has been the creation of a South West London Patients Partnership Forum, which seeks to give cancer patients in this area a strong voice in the provision of cancer services.

These are just a few examples of the many national activities in which KCUK has been involved.

We welcome all suggestions and offers of practical help. If you have particular skills which could help us to achieve our goals, please let us know.
