One week post op.

My first message on the board so i thought i'd tell you where i'm at.

Today i'm one week post op. Recovering at home from the complete removal of my left kidney. My 2.8cm tumour was discovered by accident while a scan was looking for stones in my gall bladder. I was told it was highly likely it was cancer. My first thought was "I guess it's my turn." Having lost my mum last September to bowel cancer and my father in law the previous year to cancer of the aesophagus, my initial thought was my number was up. But hang on i thought. I'm 38, fit and healthy with no other health issues. I'm showing no symptoms and feel fine. I decided then that this 2.8cm unwanted visitor was going to have a little fight on it's hands.

Last week the whole kidney was removed and i'm now recovering at home. It was key hole so i'm rapidly growing stronger everyday. A little discomfort inside but on the whole i'm doing fine. My thoughts are now just turning towards the results of the tests on the removed kidney. Scans showed no other tumours anywhere so i do consider myself very lucky at the minute that this tumour, cancer or not, was discovered very early in it's unwanted life. My wife and I have crossed fingers for the results that should be with me soon. I was told i would be telephoned two or three weeks after the op but will have an out patients appointment in six weeks.

So that's the story so far. We're playing a waiting game. Reading other people's storys is of great help so as my story progresses maybe in time someone will be able to take a little comfort from my little fight.

playing the waiting game

Nice to hear from you Scott, new members are always welcome. I was particularly struck by your comment 'playing the waiting game'. Unfortunately this is something we all have to do especially the waiting of scan results etc and it can be a particularly worrying time. I must say that on the face of it your story sounds very optimistic. Please keep us informed as to how you are progressing and any future and further information you wish to provide us with.

Wishing you all the best

Alan

Thanks for the best wishes Alan. All the signs are good at the minute. My wife and I have sat and talked about all the possibilities. I'm sure everyone goes through the same things when diagnosed. If i can beat this bully of a disease (if indeed it is a disease and not a cyst) it would be nice to put something back so to speak. To help other people who are going through similar things. I don't mean run a marathon or sit in a bath of beans either. lol. Something more practical.
Whilst i while away the time waiting for the results and recouperating, i'll have to get my thinking cap on.

Smile

I've found this forum to be one of the best sources of information out there about kidney cancer - good luck, sounds as if everything is going to work out just fine for you.

Live, laugh and love - it's so much better than the alternative. Take care of yourself and those you love.

FANTASTIC NEWS! I'm so pleased for you. I've had a scare recently as we were told that my Mum's cancer had come back (had right kidney out 3 years ago) but it hasn't. Now you need to mend, get out in the fresh air and book a holiday.
Take care

Hi Scott & Shell,

It was great to read two pieces of good news!

Good news Scott that although your tumour was cancer it hadn't spread at all. Even better is the fact that it was under 3cm in size. There is a report (can't put my hand on it at the moment but it is a reputable academic one) that tumours discovered and removed before they reach 3cm in size are extremely unlikely to spread - ever. Hope your recovery continues well.

I was also really pleased to read that your mum's cancer hadn't spread Shell. What a worry it must have been for you all and what a blessing to find out that it hadn't after all.

Love

Lynne

I've now had my post op 6 week chat with my surgeon. Here's the technical bit. My cancer was Conventional Clear Cell Carcinoma grade 2. PT1A was it's little title. PNO meant the lymph nodes were negative. PMX means no disease was detected near it.
I was told "You're a kidney cancer survivor. Go and enjoy your life".

As you can imagine this news is amazing. Now when i was diagnosed back in April i said that if i get through this unscathed, then i will want to put something back. I've just registered for my first 10K run in Lincoln in October. The giving back starts now.

Great, great news. So very pleased for you.

Talking Post Op 8 months on

My husband (52) had his left kidney removed at the end of Jan (pt1b pn0 pm0 grade 3 fuhrmann). The op was, but also not a big deal really....He was a real warrior and came through better than he did when he has his wisdom teeth out. Op on Monday - discharged Sunday - in town having a coffee on Tuesday! He has not really suffered any pain and the most distressing part was the effects the morphine had on him in hospital...send him loop de loop and he was convinced that one of the nurses was a spy and was going to kill him for information......Soon got that medication changed. Sleeping on the side came back after about 5 weeks. He didnt have keyhole surgery and has a massive scar.

May CT scan was 'clear and very good' according to the oncologist. He takes no medication

We have just returned from Greece where we had a month with the kids to catch up for us all. Hubby swam and windsurfed nearly every day, 2 hours at a time and felt strong and healthy. He hadnt 'felt like surfing for 2 years prior to his diagnosis. We believe that the tumour was slowly growing for that time. No more night sweats, lethargy or feeling down, or other weird things.
Sept 20th is ultrasound and chest xray checkup and visit to Urologist. Hubby is nervous and often panics but he is sure that all will be well as he is so well.
I never thought that we would be here and in this situation, and may this continue.
Many thanks to this great site that gives me so much support that I can support Hubby and kids. Blessings you all whoever, whatever your belief.

All being well HUbby will run Lincoln 10k for Kidney Cancer in 2011

Dear Padipaws, Scott, Lynne, Julie .....and many others

I felt I must say a huge "Thank you" to all of you who take the time and trouble to post your "good news stories" on the site. I was carer for a kidney cancer patient and I know how valuable this can be to both patients and carers.

I wish you all the very best and look forward to hearing about your (and your loved ones) continued good health.

Good luck to your hubby Padipaws- and thanks for thinking of KCUK

Take care of yourselves, all of you
Jackie
