| Current Awareness Campaign | The campaign began on 10 November 2003 |
| NEW LIGHT ON KIDNEY CANCER | |
| In the UK there is still relatively little awareness of kidney cancer and the needs of patients and carers. The kidney cancer research budget is modest, and there are not enough specialists in the treatment of the disease. Patients and carers often do not have access to the full information they need to make informed decisions about treatment. Our 'New Light on Kidney Cancer' campaign, launched on 10 November 2003, seeks to improve the situation by highlighting these issues in the national and local media, and by informing patients and carers of how they can gain access to the most reliable, up-to-date information and the best treatment. Please help us to get our message across by supporting the campaign and doing something, perhaps in your local area, to help focus attention on kidney cancer. We need organisational and financial help of various kinds. By working together we can make a real difference. |

| Lectures by Dr. Tallberg on Cancer Bio-Immunotherapy the Role of Autologous Tumour Vaccines |
30-31 May 2000 |
|
Dr. Thomas Tallberg, who heads the Institute of Bio-Immunotherapy in Helsinki, Finland, came to London at the invitation of KCUK on 30-31 May 2000 to give two lectures at the University of Westminster on his innovative approach to cancer treatment. The basis of Dr. Tallberg's biological approach is the need to correct the cancer patient's metabolic, hormonal and immunological deficiencies. The recommended methods combine nutritional supplementation, hormone therapy, certain dietary restrictions, and the administration of a vaccine made from the patient's own tumour cells. This treatment is non-toxic and has no significant side-effects. Although Dr. Tallberg has applied his bio-immunotherapy approach to many forms of cancer, he has achieved especially encouraging results over many years in cases of kidney cancer (renal cell carcinoma) and skin cancer (melanoma). |

| There is an urgent need to find new treatments for kidney cancer, since the conventional treatments that are on offer do not produce a significant response in most patients, especially when the disease has metastasised (spread beyond the site of the primary tumour to other parts of the body). In view of the general recognition that immunotherapy offers the best way forward, and the growing interest in the use of vaccines, Dr. Tallberg's lectures offered a valuable opportunity to learn more about this rapidly developing field of medicine. | |
